Harry Reid: I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon
When Vice President Dick Cheney visited BYU, it was announced that Harry Reid, the highest national office holder who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, would also be speaking at BYU. This is in line with the Church’s long standing policy of political neutrality.
He spoke of his personal journey, his faith, and his politics:
It is not uncommon for members of the Church to ask how I can be a Mormon and a Democrat. Some say my party affiliation puts me in the minority of our Church members. But my answer is that if you look at the Church membership over the years, Democrats have not always been the minority, and I believe we won’t be for long. I also say that my faith and political beliefs are deeply intertwined. I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it.
Your Personal Note:
I am a Mormon democrat and I am proud of it. I am Mormon to the core. I have so many ancestors who arrived in the west before the railroad that I joke about being a Mormon purebred. I was raised a democrat, my parents and their parents were democrats. When and where did the idea that the republican party, a party that consistently puts business interests above the interests of the individual, is contemptuous of the needy, will not respect and sustain a plan to support the elderly, children, and the insane, and does not embrace democracy, would be the party that best represents LDS teachings.
Possibly Mormons have become too prosperous for their own good. Prosperity is not proof that we are worthy; prosperity is a trial of faith in action.

Very easy! It's called giving people a choice. If we take that choice away then why are we here. Democrats are not evil, those that think so are not educated.

I am a Mormon convert of 15 years. I am very active and devout. My husband who is also a convert and I attend the temple monthly and strive to live the gospel as completely as possible and teach this to our five small children. I am a Democrat. Many converts to the church are. As the church continues to grow, forward thinking, progressive LDS people are changing the face of the church. We do not intend to change the gospel which is true, simple the culture.

Its always been hard for me as an LDS member to understand how any member could be a Democrat, baby killing abortion, homosexual marriage, pro communist, hate America, frees speech only for liberals etc.. I am sure many LDS Democrats would have problems with a member who is a Nazi and what is really the difference. Nazis had wholesale murder, limited free speech, hated America but they didn't allow homo marriage. Come to think of it they had higher morals then the American Democrat party.
