Harry Reid: I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon
When Vice President Dick Cheney visited BYU, it was announced that Harry Reid, the highest national office holder who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, would also be speaking at BYU. This is in line with the Church’s long standing policy of political neutrality.
The text of Harry's talk can be found here and here with video and audio links here.
He spoke of his personal journey, his faith, and his politics:
It is not uncommon for members of the Church to ask how I can be a Mormon and a Democrat. Some say my party affiliation puts me in the minority of our Church members. But my answer is that if you look at the Church membership over the years, Democrats have not always been the minority, and I believe we won’t be for long. I also say that my faith and political beliefs are deeply intertwined. I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it.

I am a Mormon democrat and I am proud of it. I am Mormon to the core. I have so many ancestors who arrived in the west before the railroad that I joke about being a Mormon purebred. I was raised a democrat, my parents and their parents were democrats. When and where did the idea that the republican party, a party that consistently puts business interests above the interests of the individual, is contemptuous of the needy, will not respect and sustain a plan to support the elderly, children, and the insane, and does not embrace democracy, would be the party that best represents LDS teachings.
Possibly Mormons have become too prosperous for their own good. Prosperity is not proof that we are worthy; prosperity is a trial of faith in action.

Very easy! It's called giving people a choice. If we take that choice away then why are we here. Democrats are not evil, those that think so are not educated.
