Schweitzer Challenges NY Millionaire to Debate (video!)
Updated below: We've now got video! See below...
Montana, like many other states, is facing a "TABOR" measure that would decimate public services. The TABOR measures are funded largely by a reclusive New York millionaire named Howie Rich.
So, our man Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT) has challenged Howie Rich to a debate in Montana. From his statement:
“Out of state millionaires have no businesses imposing their will on the hard working people of Montana,” said Governor Schweitzer. “Howard Rich and his wealthy buddies won’t even reveal who is funding their campaign. I invite them to come to Montana, tell us who they are and what their shady initiative is all about.”Governor Schweitzer continued, “Mr. Rich has clearly seen Manhattan, New York – maybe he should meet me in Manhattan, Montana. As a rich world traveler he has probably seen the Kremlin, maybe it is time for him to meet the folks of Kremlin, Montana. It is appalling that big money fat cats would use our state as a testing ground for their ridiculous agenda. They need to stop hiding behind their money and be straight with the people of Montana.”
Nice work, Brian. Keep us posted.
There's more coverage from the Billings Gazette.

That's nice and all, but it's just Scweitzer just showboating and politicking. Which is not wrong necessarily, but he's thinking more about 2008 (whether it's the presidency or his gubernatorial re-election). That's my biggest personal problem with him. He's not that genuine - but he does actions like this that make east coast and New England liberals think he's some kind of great populist leader in red Montana. He's a politician. Not a bad one either. But genuine if you want genuine look at Wyoming's Governor Freudethal, Nebraska's Senator Nelson, or North Dakota's Rep. Pomeroy. Of course they're much more rightward than Scweitzer...

Great -- since Ted Kulongoski did the exact same thing a few weeks ago, maybe this will get some national attention to the TABOR measures. And that would mean people might learn more about what an utter disaster it's been in Colorado.
This is not politicking, WyoBlueDog. If this passes, it would probably do more to make Schweitzer's job hard and more to hurt Montana than losing a house of the legislature. He needs to fight it.
