Putting our money where our mouth is
The Big Strategy

If anything is clear this morning, it is that the so-called "net-roots" have displayed a startling amount of strength in a Connecticut primary. So many more issues ebb and flow into that race and the current national trends clearly favor the outsider but that single fact remains. It's been shown before (see Tester in Montana and various other races) but it makes more sense now than ever.

My question to us as a community: should we not make that step ourselves? Could we not set up a way to support Western Democrats both with money and resources, using our site as the fulcrum to inform, support and advocate?

I offer three simple contentions:

First, that we have less than 100 days left before the general election. In so many races across the West, time is of the essence and so is money.

Second, I believe we could easily come to consensus as a community on which candidates to support (or even how many) very quickly. Nominations, followed by voting would do the trick.

Third, the internet makes it easy for us to do so: setting up an ActBlue page, providing phone numbers and contact information for people to get involved, etc. These aren't herculean efforts and would even raise the profile of Western Democrats in general through our efforts.

We may end up making a small difference. But in that effort we can acknowledge that we helped and spotlighted those individuals that embody our principles and raised awareness in general. That is more than a lot of people can say.

I look forward to hearing back on this from our community. As always, it is a pleasure to be involved in such a group.

Thanks.

Good idea, especially with the new Nevada caucus..

As a Democrat living far from the region but with a keen interest and belief in the Western Strategy, I'd really value a Western slate put together by those able to assess the realities on the ground and balance them with the platforms of the various candidates.
A lot of the candidates in this cycle have appealing platforms, but it's very hard for outsiders to form an estimate of which seats will be easier to tip, and which platforms play best to Western voters.

Can anybody tell me what happened with Frontier PAC? I believe they were also based in Portland. Wasn't this more or less their agenda? The URL www.frontierpac.org hasn't been working for awhile. And by the way, I have sent some funds to Jon Tester as a result of learning some things about him through this site.

Unfortunately, Frontier PAC has been shelved for the time being. To be completely blunt, Frontier PAC was a grassroots effort run by two guys (my great friend Isaac Goldstein and I) who have found themselves engaged (not to each other) and forced to devote their time to pursuits that pay.

It was a frustrating decision, because we were raising enough money to--we were thinking--have some impact, but not enough for the salaries and overhead required for two people working full-time. Frontier PAC has not necessarilly been scrapped forever--and we both believe in the Western Strategy 100%--but we're both working towards those goals in other capacities at least through 2006.

I liked the look and feel of Frontier PAC. Let's hope they find a money angel.

As for Western Democrat, I'd really like to put a Western Democrat bumper sticker on my car. Anyone want to design and print some?

Well, from what I hear there is no opposition to the idea itself. The next question is: how many candidates should we pick?

I think we could also do some bumper sticker work Leo...

One per state would be good.
