Idaho-1: Western Dem vs. Wingnut of the Year
In Idaho, the open congressional seat (vacated by Republican Butch Otter, running for Governor) is heading for a barnburner.
In the blue corner, you'll find Larry Grant - a former local tech executive and attorney. Running hard, he's a tough, smart, accomplished Democrat.
In the red corner, you'll find Bill Sali - a state representative that's so crazy his own party leaders can't stand him.
Over at Swing State Project, they've declared Bill Sali GOP Wingnut of the Year, and quoted Idaho House Speaker Bruce Newcomb (R):
“That idiot is just an absolute idiot. He doesn’t have one ounce of empathy in his whole fricking body. And you can put that in the paper.”
Read the coverage at Swing State. Check out this diary at DailyKos. And then dip into Idaho blog Red State Rebels for complete coverage.

Why are all of our Republican opponents "wingnuts" all of the sudden? They are our political adversaries, and when you call them stupid names, you make yourself sound childish, ignorant, and ultra-liberal. I thought this was a site about NEW ideas for Democrats, like turning the Rocky Mountain West, but if this is just another ultra-lefty rant site in the same vein as Daily Kos or Democratic Underground, then you actually are no new alternative, just another pathetic, pessimistic liberal Democrat. The kind I'm sick of.

Why shouldn't we call Sali a wingnut? He disgusts even his Republican colleagues in Idaho! He's despised because he IS a nut.

WyoBlueDog-
I agree with you in principle -- "wingnut", "crazy", "ultra-extremist" etc. are way overused and lose their meaning because of it. Sali seems like one guy that deserves the label.

Thanks for the props, OregonDem, but NO ONE deserves the label. We should call people stupid names.
If I were running in ID-1, I'd point out his EXTREMISM, yes, and then offer an alternative center-right agenda (being Idaho). But I wouldn't call him names, and if he called ME names, then I'd launch commercial tearing into him as childish, amateurish, and pathetic.
We're Democrats, not Republicans.

A double post! In the second one, I corrected a grammatical mistake from the first. Apologies.

If I were running in ID-1, I wouldn't call him anything -- I'd just remind voters of that quote from the Republican House speaker over and over...
