Gas prices and Idaho, Montana and Wyoming

Pacific Views wonders if low gas prices in the interior West are keeping the President's poll numbers up. It sounds a little too simple, but it makes for an interesting set of maps.

Very interesting maps. I was recently in Utah and kept thinking about trucking Utah gasoline to California. $3 a gallon gas really hits the Bush base. If UT, WY, ID, and MT reach $3 a gallon, the red will begin to fade.

I think the red is starting to fade anyway in Utah. I am running for the Leg here in one of the redder parts of the state, and have seen more support, and attendce at Democratic events than ever before, even durin gthe 2008 election, which is a pretty big deal considering it's a mid-term election. Rebulican turnout is going to be down, so I think you will see a lot of upsets this time around.

Hello,

I dont think relative low gas prices in Wyoming are keeping the Presidents approval ratings up. I just paid 2.67 a gallon today to fill my tank, thats the lowest grade gas and cheapest in town. The high gas prices are affecting us in Wyoming just as they are the entire nation.

His ratings are going down as they are across the country. We here although are paying high prices, enjoy a huge budget surplus as a percentage of our budget. Oil and Gas are a huge part of our economy and tax base, since we do not have a tax on income.

Because politics are local, Republicans will continue to dominate at the local level with pockets of Democrats. At the state level, our Governor will continue to be more popular than the President. I also believe that this will be the toughest campaign for our congresswoman Cubin, who I think will not win this election.

We in Wyoming care about the environment as well as business. We have the cleanest air of any state. We care about clean water and our wildlife. We have developed a balance between our environment and business.

Although I do care about the gas prices elsewhere, I am a transplant from California, we here in Wyoming must travel farther distances than many in this country to get basic services. So although we may enjoy relatively low gas prices, we have to pay more in the end, because we tend to drive more because of the size of our state and our relative ruralness.

I live in California and $3.00 plus is a natural for us, when we find gas for under $3.00 we have a savings.
