Kitzhaber '08 Buzz
Presidential Politics

Can you hear it? Apparently Joe Trippi made time for the Beaver State to visit the good doctor.

Matt Singer at Left in the West:

I’m hearing some buzz out of Oregon that Governor Kitzhaber, M.D., may be eyeing an ‘08 run for the Presidency. Consider this Dean round 2 but less likely to piss people off. Kitzhaber was hugely popular in Oregon, is a doctor, is not a Clintonite, and is declaring war on America’s health care system.

Whether there’s much to these rumors remains to be seen. But it’s worth noting that Kitzhaber came out of Oregon, which is actually a purple state with its rural Eastern half, with wide marks for popularity.

Political Wire:

From a Political Wire reader: "Rumors are flying around in Oregon... Apparently, Joe Trippi was in Portland last week and met with former Gov. John Kitzhaber (D). Recently, Kitzhaber declined to run for a comeback third-term as Governor -- but announced instead a campaign to reform health care in America."

"Win or lose, a presidential campaign would be a heckuva way to launch a campaign to fix health care. Seems like Trippi might be picking another horse."

A popular governor can combine executive experience with a fresh face on the national scene.

Medical care is a bread and butter issue. Bread and butter issues are the best way for Democrats to get new votes. Medical care and education are two issues that play very well for Democrats. There is also a rural appeal for better medical care and education in rural areas.

A welcome face to a not-crowded-enough field. Curse Richardson for his philandering. He would have been my favorite. Now I'm back to comfortable open-mindedness.

This isn't the first time that I've heard that rumor about Richardson, and even if I didn't think he'd make a great President, I would still get upset everytime someone trotted out a rumor. If its true, fine, back it up then.

I note that no evidence of the charge against Governor Richardson has been forthcoming since Emmett's post asking for some.

About John Kitzhaber's health care idea. Here is a novel apporach, "why not make people responsible for their own health? Make them get up off their oversized butt's, turn off the TV and get outside and do some excerise? I'm so tired of the government handouts to people who refuse to take care of themselves!
Yes, I realize there are people who are just stuck in situations where they can not afford health care, those are not the one's I'm talking about. To many
people look to the government for help when they could get it themselves by investing a little time into their own care. Staying out of the fast food joints would go a long way towards improving people's health.

What a day for the Democrats! And what a clarion call for us to get cracking! the Winds of Change are Blowin' strong. First thing: We need someone with the tenacity of Ghengis Khan to whip our voting system back into shape, trust is all but gone out here. Many of us believe if it hadn't been so tinkered with we wouldn't have gone through the last six years. Also we need to dump Gordon Smith, the boy who carried water for G W Bush on every crucial vote. I think John Kitzhaber is a great choice, if he'd do it. Patti
