Winter taking on Tancredo
Colorado, Congress

Now, Colorado has two "Fighting Dems" running in suburban Denver districts. Along with Jay Fawcett, who is running for Joel Hefley's Bob Beauprez's open seat in the CO-5, Bill Winter is running against uber-conservative Tom Tancredo in the 6th District.

I believe that the 30+ Veterans running for Congress as Democrats recognize that Mr. Bush has failed in his role as Commander in Chief and has not made our Country safer. I believe these 30+ Veterans, these American heroes, recognize that Congress has failed in its duty to hold the President accountable for his actions and policies. I believe that we recognize that a new approach is needed to the Iraq War, to the “war on terror”, and to national security in general. I believe that we recognize that veterans and the troops need REAL support not just empty words. And I believe that the 30+ Veterans running for Congress as Democrats will deliver on those promises and bring a new day in American politics.

As with Bob Dornon in Orange County, a smart western Dem can use a suddenly high profile Western crazy Republican as a great Judo counter weight. The more Tancredo marches across the country, preparing himself as the darling of the far right in 2008, the more Winter can look like a serious, considerate, smart candidate. I would just let Tancredo hang himself than knock him more than you need to though.

Actually Emmett, Bob Beauprez represents Colorado's 7th Congressional District. He is leaving that seat to run for governor. The 5th C.D. has been represented by Joel Hefley for nearly 20 years. The current speculation is that Hefley will not seek reelection next year. A spokeswoman has said recently that he's expected to announce whether or not he will run "in the coming weeks."

The 5th Congressional District is largely El Paso County, Colorado Springs and environs. Republicans there outnumber Dems by more than 2 to 1.

Jay Fawcett is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, a veteran of the first Gulf War. He is a senior policy analyst for U.S. Northern Command. According to a recent news report, Fawcett has raised about $51,000 so far, a record amount for a Democrat there.

This is the second time in about a week that I've made a mistake regarding a congressional district in a Western state whose name begins with 'C.' I hope it's just carelessness, not stupidity.

Good points on the race. Doesn't Hefley have some ethics problems too?

The Cost of War

I would like to thank The Western Democrat for writing about my campaign. I truly appreciate it!

Yesterday morning I went to the meeting of the United Veterans Committee of Colorado, an organization that brings various veteran's advocate groups together. Tom Tancredo showed up late, spoke for five minutes, and left, but an interesting thing happened while he was there.

Mr. "Let's Nuke Mecca" spent his whole five minute speech talking about all the "positive" things being done in Iraq. Most of what he said was provably untrue. I don't know if he was actually lying, or just doesn't know what he's talking about. Either way it's a shame that he chooses to put partisanship above the welfare of America and our troops.

At any rate, Mr. Tancredo was asked what he thought about an article in Lancet, a British medical journal. He was told that the article says that over 100,000 Iraqi children have died as a result of American sanctions and bombs. His response was, and I quote, "That's the cost of war. People die."

100,000 dead children is nothing more to him than the cost of war. Last Saturday night I attended an immigration forum at the University of Denver. Mr. Tancredo was a panelist. A Denver immigration lawyer pointed out that some 4,000 people had died in the desert last year alone as a result of our current immigration policies. Mr. Tancredo's supporters responded with cries of "So what?" and Mr. Tancredo said all those people should have gone to a "port of entry" and then they wouldn't have died.

This is a man who wants to limit a woman's freedom to make her own choices about her body, and wants to outlaw abortion completely because he says every fetus is a human being and every fetus must be protected. But when 4,000 people die in the desert, he doesn't mind at all, and when 100,000 children are killed, he calls it "the cost of war."

Well I'm going to send this guy into retirement and then we can call THAT the cost of war too!

Please donate to the campaign now and help me take back America!
