Sportsmen really are the best environmentalists out West. Jerry Brady, a Dem running for governor in Idaho, is pointing out that Butch Otter's proposal to sell 15 percent of the national forests to subsidize disaster relief isn't a good thing for Idaho's bullet and bait crowd:

Brady said the best hunting and fishing land likely would be sold off first.

Jack Trueblood, a recently retired longtime Idaho Fish & Game employee, said, “This is bad news for people who hunt and fish in Idaho. Rep. Otter is showing us, as a congressman, what kind of governor he would be. For sportsmen and women, this issue is important enough to decide the governor’s race.”

Otter, by the way, was one of 11 Republicans that voted against the Katrina relief bill. Disaster relief is fine, as long as we can fire sale some federal land while we're at it.

Otter's proposal is reminiscent of the Pombo/Gibbons bill to sell off old mining claims at post Christmas sale prices. That proposal was beaten back by Western Dems, sportsmen and Western GOP Senators scared to fight Dems and sportsmen. Looks like Brady is following the same recipe to sink Otter's idea.

Considering that Otter's main primary challenge has droped out
and Idaho's ultra conservative voting public he will win. On the other hand Jerry Brady's 42 % last time(2002 Gov.) is decent and this is a really great strategy.

I'm going to make sure my father-in-law knows about this, and see if we can't get a couple more votes for Brady out of the deal.
