Colorado officially a Blue State (according to GOP)
Colorado, Policy Issues

In the aftermath of Referendum C and D in Colorado, a Colorado GOP state rep. said, "I think we now have become a blue state, frankly."

While the specific funding measure (Ref. D) failed, a partial overturn of the anti-tax TABOR (Ref. C) won. Is this the first sign of the anti-tax movement (that began in 1978 with CA's Prop 13) losing its steam?

TABOR was not partially overturned. TABOR is a section of the Colorado Constitution. Ref. C was not a Constitutional amendment. TABOR provides a process for the state to ask permission to increase taxes, and that process was followed in Ref C. TABOR is still fully in force.

Grover Norquist and his friends will challenge Ref C in court making precinsely the argument you did, that TABOR was partially overturned without amending the Constitution. They will lose because that statement is false.

Stengel's comment that Colorado is a blue state was just hype. We're a purple state. But the wackier Stengel and his friends get, the more likely we will become a blue state.

I should have said "increase spending," not "increase taxes."

I wouldn't go so far as to say blue state quite yet. But there is hope, yes? I think the next several steps involve electing a Democratic governor, voting out Senator Allard and supporting a Democrat for president in 2008, something Colorado has only done once since 1964!

Once all that happens then, yes! We will be true blue. . . .

(and yes, we know that sometimes they're very, very wrong. Other times, they're right on.)
