The Next Hackett and OH-2, CA-48
From Swing State Project:
Orange County isn't as bad as convention wisdom suggests. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez calls it home and it has also elected Democrats like Richard T. Hanna and Jerry Patterson. The trend could also be favorable for Democrats. Red Orange County resulted from Oakies and other midwesterners populating the area, but the current migration patterns of immigrants provided Sanchez her victory and could make the district far more competitive in years to come.
Open seats are targets of opportunity that are critical for a minority party. So let's put the Orange County jokes aside, find a good candidate ready to fight relentlessly, and give the immigrant communities a reason to vote for a Democrat.
For the last couple of days, I've been thinking "Man, if that Hackett race had only been out West, we would've shown them." Well, we might actually get a chance.
Western states have a much meaner attitude towards the current Rs in DC, and given the chance to spread the hate in Southern California, we might be able to pull a couple of seats out. In addition to the Cox seat cited above, the CA-50, with Duke Cunningham making a mess of things, will be a chance for a pick-up as well.

Neither Cox nor Cunningham are plausible pickups, unless we get a serious bigtime candidate in there with just the right profile.
That is, unless, Cunningham insists on running for re-election. Unlikely.

The big question about Cunningham is can he hang onto the seat until he retires in 2006 or will he have to resign before then? Duke will definitely not be running. It is still a tough district for Democrats, but if there is a special election, the calculus will be different, including a possible multiway race. In 2004 Francine Busby ran a credible campaign in this district with very little help from the national party. When Duke got into trouble, the national party began to notice her. The important point is that every seat should be contested.

Politicians' private-jet use raises questions
Talk about the “elites.” When was the last time you used a private jet? Just good, clean fun with lobbyists, of course.

CA-52 is a tough district for Democrats, but Jim looks like a great candidate. If we run a strong candidate in CA-52, Duncan Hunter will be forced to spend resources defending his seat. If we don't, his money will go to help other Republicans. More importantly, this district deserves a better Congressman than the incumbent. If there is a big, blue wave in '06, we need to be prepared to ride it.
