Bill Richardson: looking forward to '08
Governors, New Mexico, Presidential Politics

Over at Salon, they've got a profile of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. In particular, they're wondering about his presidential aspirations.

Nowadays, Richardson is ascending beyond New Mexico again, including well-publicized trips to New Hampshire. James Pindell, of the political Web site PoliticsNH.com, says Richardson is ahead of any of the other potential 2008 contenders in the number of New Hampshire visits this year. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has made two visits. Sen. Hillary Clinton has also made two. Richardson? Three, so far.

"Most of these people come in, they do their speech, and they're outta here," Pindell says. "He spent two whole days."

Does he make for a good candidate? Salon interviews his GOP opponent from 2002:

"He is a very deft, very savvy politician," Sanchez says. "He knows how to relate to people just like Bill Clinton" does. Picking up issues that might resonate with swing voters, Sanchez says, is an example of Richardson's "learning from the master."

What about his 2006 re-election campaign?

Now, with his reelection campaign looming in 2006, Richardson has already raised as much as $3 million. Yet he is the only one in the race; no serious candidates have emerged.

"It's hard to want to run a race when you know you're going to get whomped," says Lonna Atkeson, a political science professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

With Richardson clearly showing interest -- perhaps his hopefully untapped war chest can be added to the ticket as a VP? It would be great to have western influence on the ticket.

Hillary/Richardson '08 ?? massive fundraising potential. period.

Not to mention -- a huge electoral milestone!

Female/minority on the ticket... wow.

Richardson is definitely on the VP short list, but why not put a Westerner at the top of the ticket? And if we want a woman on the ticket, why not Napolitano?

Putting a "westerner" on the top of the ticket is beginning to ring true as a possibility for the GOP.

Bob Woodward was quoted in the Denver post as saying:

""He would be 67 if he ran and was elected. Reagan was 69. Republicans always like the old warhorse….both parties like to nominate vice presidents... Cheney would do it, and I think it's highly likely, so stay tuned."

Will Cheney reverse himself?

W. has not yet cast his vote for the 2008 nomination, but it will be a big vote. His first choice is probably Jeb. His second choice is probably Cheney. After that it is hard to guess, possibly Rice, Allen, or Brownback.
