The Nevada Outdoor Democrats
Lately, there's been a lot of talk here at Western Democrat about coalition of rural progressives. In Oregon, they're launching a Rural Democrats Caucus and in King County, Washington (home of Seattle) there's a group calling themselves Rural Majority.
Given all this activity, it might be instructive to check in with a group that has a couple of years under their belts: the Nevada Outdoor Democratic Caucus. What's their story?
For years some Nevada Democratic candidates campaigned against opponents who would routinely accuse them of being anti-guns, anti-hunting, and therefore, anti-sportsmen and women, and they might be accused of favoring locking away our public lands. These allegations are partisan attacks. The NODC was formed to give voice to Nevada Democrats that strongly support our rights as sportsmen and women. These Nevada Democrats value our Western heritage and traditions. The NODC is not anti-wilderness. Wilderness areas are a part of wildlife conservation and provide hunting and fishing to sportsmen and women who can pack in. Wilderness areas provide Nevada outfitters and guides with important work in rural Nevada.
Another interesting tidbit from the site:
Nevada has 30,000 members of the National Rifle Association, and 10,000 of those Nevada NRA members are Democrats.

I think this is a great trend. Here in Wyoming, I participate in the Wyoming Young Democrats as the State Treasurer. Withink the National YDA, there is a movement to start a Rural Caucus at our August National Convention in San Francisco. I also participate in the Progressive Democrats of America, and they are pushing the idea of having each state start a Progressive Caucus in the Democratic Party. There is also the Heartland Democrats of America. I think this is a great group in Missouri, which can be replecated in other states with large rural populations.

We have a new and restored Rural Caucus in Utah dedicated to bringing rural citizens into a political party that actually cares about the future of our state and rural livelihoods.

(and yes, we know that sometimes they're very, very wrong. Other times, they're right on.)
