Schweitzer Conservation Strategy
Governors, Montana, Policy Issues

SchweitzerhuntingDavid Sirota is talking about Governor Brian Schweitzer's conservation strategy.

I call this the Red-State Conservation Coalition - it is a way to bridge a gap between environmentalists (who demographically lean left) and outdoorsmen (who demographically lean a little right) - and unify them to fight for a common agenda.

Along with the cultural stuff (like being comfortable in hunting/fishing gear), it's also about policy choices.

For instance, he signed a bill "which made permanent the state's Habitat Montana program" - a program that "uses about $4 million a year to work with landowners to conserve game habitat on private land, including purchasing conservation easements."

Head on over to Sirotablog for more - and to catch a replay of a Schweitzer campaign ad on conservation.

Many years ago, in Ohio, we were able to get the Ohio Sierra Club and the Ohio Wildlife Legislative Fund (WLF) to actually work together on a number of conservation issues.

While Sierra Club was primarily interested in non-game issues and WLF interested in game issues, they worked together on land preservation issues, protection of waterways, and forestry issues. Once the WLF could accept that all Sierrans (environmentalists) are not anti-hunting, and Sierrans could accept that all WLF (sportsmen) do not want to shoot everything in sight, they worked quite well together.

Bridging gaps between sportsmen and environmentalists is a great stategy!
