Draft Schweitzer 2008?
Ever since Emmett O'Connell pointed out the sudden proliferation of Brian Schweitzter for President blogs, we've been paying attention. Well, it looks like one of them is picking up steam.
Over at SchweitzerForPresident.Blogspot.com, they've now got an online petition - and they're asking folks to sign it to encourage the governor to run for President in 2008. And you can even pledge a contribution in the event that he does run.
We, the undersigned, declare our fervent hope that you, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, will stand for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2008. ...With the soul of our nation under attack by its own government, you and you alone have shown the kind of honest, principled, and decisive leadership necessary to restore this country's integrity and spirit. Where other politicians perform chameleon-like acrobatics in speeches, you are comfortable in your own skin. You stand for what you believe, and you lead with your heart rather than by what polls or focus groups say.
Do y'all think this could happen - or is it too early?

Yes and yes. Yes it could happen. Yes it is too soon. Not that 2008 is too soon, but 2005 is too soon for the campaign. Maybe not too soon to collect signatures, but Brian needs to concentrate on his day job right now. By 2007 the whole political landscape could change. There could be a crowded presidential field or one clear leader from each party. The issues could change. The polls could be up or down for either party. The economy could be up or down. The war, who knows? Brian’s strength comes partly from being a fresh outsider. Hence he should stay fresh and outside as long as he can. Montana is a great place for that. I signed the petition hoping to see a draft in 2007 (and not from the Selective Service).

Like most of the people who post on WesternDemocrat.com, I really like Brian Schweitzer. But he's just 6 months into his first term as governor. It seems too early to even declare him a great governor, let alone a great presidential candidate.
I hope he carries on as he started. It's heartening to see an effective, popular Democrat who can talk sense and take principled stands. Two years from now, I'll be ready to decide whether he's President material. Now is too soon.

What I know of Gov. Schweitzter is all very positive, but he has only been governor for about six months. The election process won't begin for another 2 years so I beleive it is too early to talk about being president right now. There are a number of great western governors who could make an argument to be the parties nominee right now. Gov. Schweitzter is not one of them simply becuase of his short term in office, let's wait and see how effective he is with Montanna before we pick him to run the whole country. If he holds true to what he has started I see a bright future for him the democrats and the country. But we do have other viable options right now. Just one mans oppinion.
