Arnold Draws a Challenger
California, Governors

That's right, ladies and gentlemen... There's a new Terminator in town.

Phil angelidesPhil Angelides, the State Treasurer of California, has launched his campaign for Governor. My experience with Phil? He was the cool guy who ran the state party back in the early 90's, who focused strongly on building the College Democrats around the state. He led a Democratic party that didn't pull its punches and fought hard.

From his kudos page:

“…among statewide Democratic officeholders preparing to run for governor in 2006, none has matched Angelides’ punch in challenging Schwarzenegger.” - Los Angeles Times, January 11, 2004

“…it is a mistake to underestimate the state treasurer… who is clearly one of the most intelligent and hardworking people in California politics.” - LA Weekly, November 21, 2003

"Then there is Angelides' Green Wave initiative, which is designed to 'bolster financial returns, create jobs and clean up the environment.'…That is precisely the sort of visionary leadership that California's pensioners need and deserve." - Sacramento Bee, March 21, 2004

“Angelides has boosted his profile in California and across the nation by making the sleepy treasurer’s office a policy powerhouse.” - Los Angeles Times, December 11 2003

Yeah, I'm a Phil fan. He's not particularly "of the west", but if you beat Arnold, well, that puts you right at the top of the list of presidential and vice-presidential prospects.

Sidenote: According to KLTV, Attorney General Bill Lockyer and actor Rob Reiner are thinking of running, too. No sign of the most Western candidate, Insurance Commish John Garamendi.
