Richardson is running
Governors, Oregon, Presidential Politics

We've suspected as much, but today it seems to be official: Bill Richardson is running for President.

Richardson is one of several Democrats and Republicans mentioned in the report. The story didn't provide any details as to which party leaders Richardson talked to or when he allegedly told them.

Richardson spokesman Billy Sparks downplayed the story -- but he didn't deny it.

"As the governor has said many times before, he is focused on this legislative session, running for re-election and being chairman of the Democratic Governors Association," Sparks said. "After that, the governor has said, 'We'll see what happens.' "

Excellent! If Richardson gets the nomination we shouldn't have to worry about carrying his home state this time. And I think he may be able to swing a few more western states our way (Nevada and Colorado most likely).

I would say Arizona and Texas would be more in play as well.

Should Richardson run, he will be crucified on the cross of the Los Alamos security scandal which occurred on his watch as Energy Secretary. As a gubernatorial candidate, this was less of an issue, but as a national candidate post-9/11, this is deadly.

Alex,
I disagree. The Wen Ho Le (SP?) story would come up again, but it's certainly not a show-stopper. I mean, who cares? That story has much less traction than Bush's AWOL National Guard one in Alabama.

Richardson's one smart cookie...I'm sure he's already got his communications staff ready with the right reply to that story that would diffuse it quickly so his candidacy could move on.

I say it'll be Edwards & Richarson as a ticket in 2008, and it'll be AWESOME. I was hoping for that in 2004, actually....

I'm not sure how exactly the Wen Ho Lee case hurts Richardson.

Will it hurt him more with conservative, national defense types who will see it as a lax prosecution of a possible threat to national secruity?

Or, will it hurt him more with civil libertarians who see the entire episode as an unfair prosecution of an innocent American citizen?

Emmett (btw, my middle name),

Exactly.
