Western Democrats are not Dixiecrats, lets just get that out of the way
New Mexico, Regionalism, The Big Strategy

I was on the way home last night, for shame, I was talking to a Republican on my cellphone while navigating Martin Way. Anyway, we were talking about the differences between the Democratic Party of the West and the Dems of the South, so called Dixiecrats.

Some people don't seem to know the difference.

...Nominating a Bay State liberal scares moderate and conservative Democrats in Southern and Western states in the same way that nominating a right-wing Senator from say, Mississippi or South Carolina, would scare moderate and liberal Republicans in the Northeast.

and as a comment:

No offence to Zell, but the wing of the democratic party that tha man belongs to is know as the DixieCrat wing. These are old men who are in the Democratic party for one reason, the Republicans freed the slaves and they're holding a grudge.

For one thing, we don't have the racial politics that followed the Civil Rights Act and built Nixon's Southern coalition and has been shooting Yellow Dogs in the south for more than 30 years. Mississippi Burning was not filmed in New Mexico. I'm not saying that the West doesn't have its own racial issues, they just aren't the same ones that are driving white men from Democratic ranks in the South.

They may listen to country music, but the West is full of real cowboys. Its just a different culture out here. Our world is not like a William Faulkner novel and if someone started screaming "STELLA, STELLA" in Boise, I'm not sure anyone would know how to take it. Lets just say, we aren't as nuanced out here. Things are pretty near the surface, what you see is what you get. A Democrat wins out here simply because he sounds mature, doesn't sound like he's jerking your chain and is likeable.

Since we're also relatively new, we don't have the historical grudges (that Hatfield and McCoy weirdness) that a lot of other parts of the country have.

You just can't take the South and spew out a bunch common stereotypes and let it go at that. The South is not just racist, Southern Baptist. It is not a William Faulkner novel or Mississippi Burning. A great number of us detest Zell Miller. And when you're talking about Kentucky, pal--you can let go of that Hatfield McCoy shit right now. You don't have to make your bones on the dead body of Southern Democrats. Try sending more electoral votes. We all worked too hard to start dividing the party. You guys have real cowboys in the west. Big deal.

(and yes, we know that sometimes they're very, very wrong. Other times, they're right on.)
